Team USA World Winter Games Sendoffs

Prior to leaving for Korea, Team USA representatives from Special Olympics PA and NJ attended a Sendoff Event at the Liacouras Center on January 23rd.
Several Special Olympics (SOPA) athletes from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, that competed in the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea from January 29th to February 5th, received a sendoff at two separate basketball games. Eight athletes and three coaches attended the Temple vs. Penn Men’s game at the Liacouras Center on January 23rd. While there, they received a brief on-court recognition and were allowed to greet the Temple Owls as they arrived on the court for pre-game warm ups. The Team USA representatives then stayed and enjoyed the game.
Likewise in Pittsburgh, PA, two athletes and one coach attended the Duquesne Dukes vs. Saint Louis Billikens game at the Palumbo Center. They also received on-court recognition, stayed for the game, and were joined by members of SOPA’s Western Law Enforcement Torch Run, Sgt. Matt Porter and Officer Rob DiPippa of the Port Authority Police.
The World Winter Games features world-class competition in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding and speed skating, among other sports. Every two years since 1968, alternating between summer and winter sports, Special Olympics World Games are a flagship event of Special Olympics which highlights on a global scale Special Olympics work in sport, health, education and community.
