Noah Rineheart York County Program Athlete Wins Sheetz Award

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) announced that Noah Rinehart, a York County program athlete, received the Sheetz Family Award of Excellence during Closing Ceremonies at the 2010 Summer Games in State College. Throughout the three-day competition from June 10 - 12, Sheetz, Inc., premier sponsor of the event, searched for one athlete who demonstrated sportsmanship, courage, dedication and a positive attitude both on and off the playing field.

Created in 2005 to honor an athlete who demonstrates a positive outlook, sportsmanship and dedication, the Sheetz Award of Excellence has quickly become a coveted distinction that many athletes strive to obtain.

Special Olympics Pennsylvania, York County athlete Noah Rinehart receives the Sheetz Family Award of Excellence from Louie Sheetz, Sheetz, Inc. Executive Vice President of Marketing.

On June 23, 2006, during a routine aquatics workout, Noah Rinehart dove off the blocks and hit the bottom of the pool, resulting in a compression fracture of his neck.  The neck injury caused paralysis and Noah had to undergo extensive physical, occupational and speech therapy.    This one-time Special Olympics Pennsylvania swimmer who had attended Summer Games numerous times in the past was now a quadriplegic.

Despite his injury, he has been an inspiration to all of his coaches and teammates and truly represents the vision of Special Olympics – – that EVERY person regardless of ability or disability is accepted, welcomed, and valued.  He has also sparked NEW ATTITUDES among others to never give up and never say that a task is too difficult.  Although he has limited use of his hands and arms and needs a special chairlift to get him in and out of the water, he still gives his best effort and does it with a smile on his face.

This year, Noah attended the 2010 Summer Games and competed in his favorite sport – swimming!  He swam the 25 Free, the 25 Back, and the 50 Back.  His goal and dream of one day returning to Summer Games became a reality.
