Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) has been selected as one of four programs within Special Olympics North America to receive a 3 year Healthy Community grant. The funding is made possible by the Golisano Foundation and will be available from 2017 to 2019.

Healthy Communities addresses the severe health disparities faced by people with intellectual disabilities through immediate and long-term solutions. A Healthy Community is a location officially by recognized by Special Olympics for efforts in creating year-round access to quality health care. Special Olympics has set a goal of having 100 locations recognized as Healthy Communities by 2020.

Out of the 3 regions in the state (east, west and central), SOPA will focus their Healthy Communities efforts in the eastern portion of the state specifically on 3 (Bucks, Montgomery and Bethlehem) local programs with expansion to at least 2 additional local programs per year. By 2019, the Healthy Communities grant will have impacted at least 7 of SOPA’s local programs.
