About
Welcome to Special Olympics
Pennsylvania, Lawrence County (SOLC)! As an accredited local program of
Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA), SOLC offers year-round sports
training and competition to children and adults with mental retardation.
Throughout Lawrence County, nearly
100 Special Olympics athletes participate in nine sports, from Aquatics
to Golf. Athletes compete in some 20 local and 10 state-level events,
and have the opportunity to compete in international games every two
years.
Training takes place at sites
throughout Lawrence County, including Westminster College, Sand Rock
Driving Range and Colonial Bowling Lanes.
The entire SOLC program is run by
volunteer effort. All funding to support training and competition comes
from the generous residents, companies, and foundations of Lawrence
County, and all monies donated to SOLC stay within the county.
Countless county residents volunteer
their time coaching teams, officiating games, organizing events, raising
funds, and playing numerous other roles. New volunteers are always
welcome.
