Welcome to Special Olympics
Pennsylvania, Schuylkill County (SOSC)! As an accredited local program
of Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA), SOSC offers year-round sports
training and competition to children and adults with mental retardation.
SOSC began in 1974 with a track and
field event. It has since expanded to 10 sports, from Aquatics to
Skiing, from Basketball to Soccer. Athletes compete in dozens of local
and state-level events, and have the opportunity to compete in
international games every two years.
SOSC is lucky to be based at the
Marlin Special Education Center, which has facilities for most of our
sports.
The entire SOSC program is run by
volunteer effort. All funding to support training and competition comes
from the generous residents, companies, and foundations of Schuylkill
County, and all monies donated to SOSC stay within the county.
Hundreds of county residents
volunteer their time coaching teams, officiating games, organizing
events, raising funds, and playing numerous other roles. New volunteers
are always welcome.
A Message From the County
Manager
My name is Susan Bosak. I am the
county manager for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Schuylkill County (SCSO)
and am a teacher at the Marlin Special Education Center. I have a degree
in home economics from Albright College and a masters degree in special
education from Lehigh University. I have been teaching at the Marlin
Center for 24 years and have been the manager of SOSC for five years. I
teach mostly home economics to secondary students and I also run a
teacher's restaurant where the students learn food preparation and
serving skills. My job as county manager includes making sure committee
members and coaches are doing their jobs, coordinating schedules for
practices and events, helping with fundraising, and answering questions.
