Winter Continuing Ed Challenge – Since it is too cold to go outside, it is a great time to take some Continuing ED!!

Special Olympics North America teamed up with NFHS, ESPN, the NFL Foundation and the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education to bring you the new online course for Unified Sports Coaches.  This free one hour long course is designed to explain Special Olympics Unified Sports and offer guidance on how to become a successful Unified Sports coach. Hosted by ESPN’s Kevin Negandhi, the course includes historical background, testimonials, tutorials and quizzes to keep the audience engaged from beginning to end.

One of our biggest challenges with Unified Sports across all levels of the organization is ensuring that coaches, players, family members, volunteers and staff have a consistent understanding of the core principles of Unified Sports.  This course helps address that issue, and SONA recommends that all existing and future Unified Sports coaches complete this updated course. Many Programs have seen success when making the course a requirement for their new Unified Sports coaches and/or as an option for continuing education.  Attached are the instructions for Programs to track coaches who have taken the course. I will also continue to send monthly course completion reports.

Please visit the NFHS website to be one of the first to take the new course:  A one minute promotional video for the course has also been created, which can be viewed or downloaded here.  I would also appreciate it if you would share this valuable and free resource with anyone who might benefit from this information.

SOPA Training and Progression Plan

We want to challenge our coaches; both new and seasoned members of our team.

The newly developed SOPA Coach Training and Progression Plan will guide coaches through our education system and provide them the opportunity for additional education and new skills. This new training plan is designed to inspire and encourage coaches to continue their education in order to be the best coach they can be and in turn provide the athletes with a better experience and a desire to be the best athlete they can be.

For more information on the Bronze, Silver and Gold level requirements see the Training & Continuing Education page of the SOPA Website:
